It's just the beginning

The GE2006 has come to an end, but letters and messages are still pouring into forums, both in the ST and online. Sorry to those who don't give a damn to politics, to your MPs, to your vote, I assume you are simply uninterested. You may wish to skip this entry altogether. Yes, I'm still not over it. Comeon after all you can't simply "move on" right? I've decided to give up on trying to inform people of what has been going on during the GE. Cos if you cannot be bothered why should I? But if you do not know the facts, don't pretend you know. If by this time you still dunno who is Jamez Gomez and about the "fixing" issue over "troublemakers", you probably slumbered the past 2 weeks away. The election might have ended, but the impression has been created, the impact has been made, and I'm afraid much damage has been done. I'm not sure about you people, but me myself, I think I grew and learnt alot. I never thought I would be so involved in politics. With the loop-sided and limited information displayed by the media- on the newspaper and TV news, I am proud that I actually bothered to attend rallies and read up online so eventually I had a clear idea of who I really support.

Some friends like me, have become very interested and a friend even emailed his MP, while others emailed Mr LTK. Me for one, did. And all I can reveal is, MPs do read their mails haha. Having read today's Forum in ST and Mr Wang's post, I realised that I had missed a point totally. It never occurred to me that PAP was trying to use the Straw Man Argument - that the PAP was trying to make it look as if the opposition is trying to overthrow the PAP and make themselves the government. But thinking back, about how the ruling party has claimed over the past few days that the people of Singapore are wise, had made the choice of a strong, good and trustworthy government, putting up a strong mandate, has made me understand why. It didn't occurred to me cos i didn't think the opposition was capable of doing that. As my friend had pointed out, the 3 opposition parties involved contested for 20, 20 and 7 seats respectively. Any one party was not even contesting for half or more of the seats in The Parliament. Therefore there was no case that the opposition party had a chance to be the ruling party. My guess is that the opposition knew they were not up to it. And it's quite clear they didn't have this intention. All they asked for was to have more opposition voices in The Parliament. They are indeed in the renewal but definitely not established yet. It's a mind game the ruling party is trying to play, emphasizing the future at stake . Therefore I almost died laughing seeing such write in to the forum.

GENERAL ELECTION 2006
Thanks to PAP victory, his family can sleep well

THE general election is finally over and families like mine can sleep well again, knowing that the People's Action Party (PAP) has been returned to power.

Congratulations to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his team for receiving a strong mandate of 66.6 per cent of the popular vote ...

Steven Cheong Thiam Hin

I mean you actually thought that was possible??

So anyway, I read the LKY's speech or letter in the ST. "Please do not assume you can change governments, young people don't understand this." In the first place, why is it assumed that the young generation wants to change government? To want to have opposition voices in the Parliament does not equate to being revolting. I think most young people are sensible enough to know and be thankful of what the government has done for them thus far, otherwise it wouldn't be what it is like today. They are surely, not anti-PAP. On the other hand, the young people feel a need to have opposition in the parliament as a check and balance. After all, since the ruling party rules, why isit that they are so adamant to have a clean sweep? Is there a need for that? With competition, there comes improvement. Is there a need to wipe out all opposition? Be it "fix" or "deal with", is there a need in the first place at all? It's disappointing to know that such idea even exist. The major issue should be working together for a better Singapore and not to think of how to eradicate the opposing views. And why assume that ALL oppositions are "troublemakers" who cannot contribute to the society, the parliament and the people? Why is it they are seen to be out to destroy Singapore? Now, who is the one who can't see the point? I really wonder. Why, in the first place, are there so many assumptions and conspiracy theories when they are not proven?

The residents in Hougang and Potong Pasir, probably won't get any upgrade anytime soon (which probably means in the coming 5 years). It's not as if most of the residents care, otherwise they wouldn't have stuck firm to their choice. But it's not fair when everyone pay taxes and when this upgrading funds are actually contributed by the people, why is it that the opposition wards are denied the upgrade? Have you actually thought that instead of dangling this huge carrot which the residents eventually didn't bite, the ruling party might perhaps win more vote if they had offered to upgrade an opposition ward?

Why is it that the serial number is written on the stubs of the voting slip if voting is really a secret? Why is it that the polling agent has to shout the names of the voter out loud? Why is it that the parties knew which community rooted for them most? Why is it that they know the young or old in certain areas gave strong support? Aren't all these supposed to be secret? Aren't voting supposed to be a secret? It's not supposed to a secret only among fellow Singaporeans but also between the government/parties and the people.

Why is there so much fear instilled? Why are there so many speculations? Note that these are not only questions raised by me but people from all over on ST and online. These questions were never answered. And so if our questions were never addressed in the first place, how can we be assumed to be nonchalant about our society, our lives? Worse, assumed that we do not know what we want.

Not conforming doesn't equate to creating havoc.

Lessons to learn

As kids, we were often told if were did certain things the way the adult wanted it, we'll be offered the carrot, and when we don't listen to them, we'll be punished. Yes it works, even with kids too. None enjoy punishment, espcially kids who are so readily intimidated once you start to threaten to stop them from having thier beloved snacks and fast food, from watching their favourite TV shows and to lock away their die-also-must-play gameboy and XBox. But adults should realise that the same trick does not work on kids as they grow older. They are now more knowledgeable. They have grown mentally, evolving to have a mind of their own, know what they want and what they don't want. They are not moved easily by the carrot, after all the carrot may not be what they desire and on the other hand, they are not afraid of punishment. In fact the more threats put into their face, the more rebellious they become. Yes, it may be true that deep down the kid still respect the adult and does agree with the adult in some way or another but just wanna defy the adult on purpose. But perhaps it's time for the adult to stop and think that he cannot control the kid forever. Perhaps what he has offered to the kid is inadequate. And the kid is now finding an alternate route to voice his dissatifaction. Perhaps, the kid really knows what he wants while the adult is adamant that the child doesn't know what's good for him. There is always a time to let go, definitely not a total let go, but e grip should not be as tight as it used to be. Of cos there will still be some kids who listen faithfully to everything the adult has to say, obey him fully for fear of punishment or perhaps is not knowledgeable (due to the lack of exposure??) to decide for himself. The important thing is when your kid disobey you, the adult should listen and tend to his needs, admit his mistake(if they had made any) and not come up with all sorts of reasons and excuses as to why your kid disobeys you. Also, offering the carrot to the kid who chose to listen to you isn't the right and only way to go about putting them in place, since afteall they are all your kids.

In any competion, there has to be a loser and a winner. The only difference lies between a sore loser and a gracious loser. When a competitor wins, all he needs to do is simpy thank the crowd, his supporters and promise to work harder for greater support. It's never gracious to try to run down ur competitor for whatever reason, for after all a victory has already been secured. It is especially embarrassing when your competitor who lost can thank the crowd and even the winner graciously. And when the win is just marginal, you should not come up with reasons as to why you didn't win as much as you should but instead look into how you could have done better. Always compare yourself to a better competitor than a weak one. Looking at how you have improved comparing yourself to a weak competitor is no improvement. And especially when you are up against a weak competitor, you do not claim that you won by a large margin due to your capabilities and excellent performance. And lastly, when the win in't overhelming, you can't claim it to be, the spectators has eyes to see for themselves.

To be a fair competitor, you should avoid trying to win support by giving your spectators free breakfast and abalone porridge, dangling huge carrots. You should not tell your spectators that you have no time to train as you have wasted time on thinking on how to fix your opponent and buying support. You should not call your competitor names such as horses or donkeys or describe the competitor team as wayang. You should not claim that your competitor is a liar, has commited a crime when you have no evidence. You do not call your opponent a troublemaker when they have seriously, made no trouble. When your opponent insisted he pinned his number tag on his shirt but was not there, later to realise through the cctv that it is in his locker but have since apologized for the confusion caused, you should accept graciously and move on. You should not continue to ask for an explanation as to why he deliberately left the number tag in the locker. Anyway it's hard to prove the intention. And you mean you can detain him cos of that??!!

But well to be fair, you have to remember to do everything you need to do on time before starting the race. And if you have lost terribly, concede defeat, don't deny the winner's victory.

My First Vote

This is getting outta hand. The news have been showing WP's Gomez video every single day since the issue was brought up. Ot's simply being blown outta proportion. It may be a mistake on his part for not submitting the form (mind you, it's just a minority form, how will it affect anyways??), but I think there has been too much talk about it by the other party. Translating Gomez's action (or inaction) into a show, a scam, a theft and a even a crime is simply outrageous. How can you put two and two together and when there is no link at all? It's starting to backfire. No wonder I can see Ah Low's frustration when he exclaimed "pls lah!" and describing PAP as a naggy old woman who just won't stop harping on the issue. WP has said it all and too bad if people want Ah Low to explain again, I bet he won't want to become another naggy old woman! Pls lah... U think WP will remove/sack Gomez? That would only prove to people that they are afterall submissive to the other party and it would indirectly prove that Gomez is guilty.

Can't these people spend more time on thinking about more impressive policies and come up with something that will benefit the people more? Rather than going on and on about something which is not of an issue at all(at least to me and most of the people I know)? It's indeed wise of WP to just shut up and move on.

To state my point, I think it's best to quote Rockson
"But the PAP and the newspaper and TV all make him look like he rape his mother and sister and steal their money then go and take drug, and then fuck a dog, and then rob a bank and then kick a little girl until she die!!! What kind of fuck thing is this?

Please lah, gahmen got nothing better to whack is it? What national issue is this? They keep say the opposition never tackle national issue, now they themself got so much time to attack one blur fuck who submit form wrongly then never admit early enough."

First say Gomez not honest, then give analogy of him as a thief, next say he's a cheater, samore link his action to a crime. Got so serious or not??? What's next?? May Rockson can give a better prediction...
"Fuck you understand?
So how now? Look for Low Thia Kiang the libary book borrow already never return is it? Never return libary book is mean he cannot be trust mah! Or tell Singaporean that Sylvia Lim last time she park car never put coupon, then the parking auntie come then she run out to put. Aiyo! See that woman also cannot trust!
Fuck you understand?"

For better understanding, the media showed some "pseudo polling cards" sent out by WP to the Joo Chiat residents with the residents' IC and addresses on it to actually ask for votes. First, if wanna blame, blame the election office lah! They sold the residents's name and particulars to WP. And who do you think "owns' the election office? Who should be held responsible then? And then if you are thinking only WP mail the "pseudo polling cards", then you are probably living in a walk-over GRC or one that probably the opposition will not win, cos this is when you don't receive from PAP. But if you are staying in a fiercely contested area, you'll receive from both parties! Oh but the news only shows WP's "despicable acts" lah, of cos.

A lot of ple have been pretty puzzled why I am so interested in this political issue. Simply cos it's interesting! I just can't understand how some people can not even know which GRC they are in, which MPs and parties are in contest, and especially when they are going to vote. U mean you are going to vote blindly? I
f you had been to the rallies, it's even better! Like on SingaporeElections, it says
"Singapore, You're being Oppressed!
Turn off the TV, Dump the Straits Times, Come to Rally!"

It's interesting to hear them talk in dialects, with Ah Low singing his Teochew tune
"天上一只鹅,政府赚钱人民没"
It ryhmes in Teochew. It means "there's a goose in the sky, the government earns but the people doesn't" In Teochew, goose sounds like Goh. Yup you get the point.

Then listen to Ah Goh's rebutt
"新加坡有一条龙,政府赚钱给人民"
It ryhmes in Hokkien, meaning "there's a dragon in Singapore, the government earns money and gives to the people" Ok so you should know who dragon refers to.

I had been to the WP Rally, at Hougang. An estimated 20,ooo attended. From what I saw from my very own eyes, it's probably more. It was damn congested! Jam from very far away, cars cant move around the vicinity and no parking lots left!! It's probably more than any of the free concerts I ever attended! Here's some pix from SG Rally.

Please not comments : Photo taken by Yawning Bread at WP rally, Hougang, 30th April 2006.Field report by Yawning Bread here.
"And that's only the central part of the crowd. The swarm was wider than my widest lens."

See I nv bluff you!! Really alotta ple... Captured on my HP...

On the tree....(Look hard for the centre of the pix with a faint red circle)

On all levels of the multi story carpark (it's not very clear due to the strong lightings)

On every level of this HDB Block beside the field! It's not the only one packed. Can't even attempt to get into the lift! Too many peopl crowding...

Some smart ass even made Home made barley and sold each miserable plastic cup for 1 buck each!!! Good mind for making business...

People leaving towards the end...This is walking away from the main crowd. There are still 10s of thousand of ple left... Oh wait a moment, does it kinda make up the number of people in the next pix??

PAP's rally the very next day at the very same venue.
